Credit Unions: safe & sound
(Click here to learn more about how BACU works)

People Helping People
The history of BACU began in 1935 when the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railway (Illinois Division) Credit Union was incorporated by the State of Illinois. Since that time, the credit union has merged with other credit unions and increased its services, membership and assets. In 1982, our name changed to Blackhawk Area Credit Union. (Click here to see the story behind our name)

But, while many things (including our name) have changed, the credit union's purpose has remained the same: to provide low-cost loans, encourage savings and provide other financial services. The union movement's motto says it all: "People helping people."

Sometimes, our name can be misleading since we offer much more than "credit" and we aren't a "union." And, unlike a bank or finance company, we are not in business to make a profit. After we pay our operating expenses and required reserves, any income is returned to the members in the form of higher dividends on savings accounts, lower loan rates and other benefits. Your credit union is member-owned and controlled, managed by a volunteer board of directors elected by the membership.

Who Can Join?
Membership in BACU is open to anyone who lives or works in the Illinois counties of Carroll, JoDaviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson and Whiteside.  In addition family members of current members are eligible for membership no matter where they live.  "Family members" include spouses, parents, grandparents, children and legal dependents, brothers, sisters and their spouses, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and sons- and daughters-in-law.

How Do I Join?
There is a $1.00 membership fee to join BACU. We also require a deposit of at least $25.00 ($5.00 if you're under the age of 25) in your savings account.  That money is yours, and may be withdrawn should you close your membership at BACU.  Once you've opened your savings account, you're eligible to take advantage of our many financial services.

BACU's Board of Directors
The credit union is managed by a volunteer board of directors that is elected by the membership each year. The directors serve one-year terms on the board. The credit union's annual meeting is held in the spring each year; all credit union members are invited to attend.

Current board members:

Chairperson - Beth Wiegmann (2 year term), Polo, IL
Vice Chairperson - Wayne Wilson (1 year term), Baileyville, IL
